SCMTD Bike Rack Program
Now you can ride the bus and ride your bike - all in the same trip. Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (SCMTD) buses are equipped with front-mounted bike racks to allow riders to combine biking and busing for your work, school, shopping or fun trips.
This Bikes on Buses program will allow SCMTD to serve another transportation need in the community. There is no charge for your bike.
The following policies and procedures are in effect:
- 1. Usage of bicycle racks is free, one bike per person.
- 2. Bike loading is on a first come, first served basis.
- 3. No bicycles are allowed inside the bus.
- 4. Bicycles may be loaded/unloaded on front racks on all posted stops in the system
These New Front-Mounted Racks:
o Hold two bikes securely --
The bike rack design allows for two bikes to be independently loaded and unloaded
o Are easy to use --
You can load or unload your bike in under 20 seconds
o Fit all types and sizes of bikes --
Most wheel sizes and frame types fit the bike racks
o Are bicycle friendly --
The bike racks are the safest racks for your bike on the market today. Neither the bus or other bikes make contact with your bike.
LOADING YOUR BIKE
As the bus approaches, have your bike ready to load. Remove water bottles, pumps or any loose items that might fall off.
1. Tell the bus driver you're loading your bike. Load from the curbside only. Do not step beyond the driver's side of the bus into the traffic lane to load your bike.
2. Pull down to release the folded bike rack.

3. Lift your bike onto the rack, fitting wheels into the slots. Each slot is labeled for front and rear wheels. Bike must fit securely in the rack in order to be transported.

4. Raise and release the support arm over the top of the front tire. Make sure the support arm is resting on the tire and not on the fender or frame.

UNLOADING YOUR BIKE
1. Tell the driver you need to unload your bike when you approach your stop.
2. Raise the support arm off the tire. Move the support arm down, out of your way.
3. Lift your bike out of the rack.
4. Fold up the bike rack if there is no other bike in the rack.
5. Return to the curb with your bike and wait for bus to leave before entering traffic.
