Why Low Floor Buses?
Effective Dates:
Dec 10 2009 - Nov 30 -0001
Santa Cruz METRO has received numerous inquiries as to the reasons for purchasing Low Floor buses for use on the Highway 17 Express Service. Many of the concerns center around insufficient seating capacity given the popularity of the service.

METRO's decision to purchase the New Flyer (2800) Low Floor buses was made because Standard Floor “Suburban” buses are no longer manufactured. Bus designs have undergone an evolutionary redesign process resulting in the Low Floor bus becoming the standard of the transit industry. On Low Floor buses, external luggage bins are not available, therefore internal luggage racks and overhead storage bins are required due the numerous travelers we transport with luggage. The accommodation of luggage is a requirement of our agreement with AMTRAK which contributes financial support for this service. METRO is well aware of the reduced seating arrangement on the Low Floors buses so every attempt is being made to schedule our high capacity buses for peak periods of commuter service. Thank you for your understanding, METRO Management.
